Pope Benedict XVI, quoting Pope Paul VI, called on believers to entrust themselves to Mary, who "assumed into heaven, has not abandoned her mission of intercession and salvation." He was speaking to more than 4,000 faithful gathered in the courtyard of the Papal Summer Residence in Castel Gandolfo during the Angelus on the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The Holy Father recalled that since the fourth century there have been Marian feasts that highlight the role of the Virgin in salvation history and celebrate the key moments of her earthly existence. He urged the faithful to turn to their Mother in heaven with the words of an 'ancient prayer: " We fly to thy partonage, O holy Mother of God despise not our petitions in our necessities but deliver us from all dangers, oh glorious and blessed Virgin."
